At Rawmarsh & Arnold Nursery School Federation, we recognise that today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens. We aim to nurture kind, thoughtful and responsible individuals who understand the importance of caring for the world around them and the people within it.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to give children meaningful opportunities to explore similarities and differences, develop respect for others, and build a strong sense of belonging within their community. Through this, we actively promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

 

Caring for Nature

Children are immersed in nature through our beautiful outdoor environment. We encourage them to care for plants and flowers just as they would their classroom, developing a sense of responsibility and respect for the natural world.

This learning is enriched through hands-on experiences such as:

• Observing tadpoles grow into frogs
• Raising butterflies
• Incubating eggs and watching chicks hatch

Through these experiences, children learn to respect living things, handle them with care, and understand the importance of looking after our environment—supporting their understanding of responsibility and the rule of law in age-appropriate ways.

We also welcome annual visits from a local farm, giving children opportunities to learn about caring for larger animals and understanding their needs.

 

Caring for the Community

We help children understand the different roles people play in society and the importance of working together respectfully.

Through visits and real-life experiences, children develop an understanding of:

• Mutual respect for others
• The importance of rules and keeping ourselves safe (rule of law)
• Their own voice and choices (individual liberty)

Visitors who support this learning have included:

• Librarians
• Hairdressers
• Nurses and healthcare professionals
• Fire service representatives
• Oral health practitioners
• Artists and musicians
• Senior community members
• Support Dogs teams

These experiences help children feel part of their community while learning to respect and value others.

 

Festivals and Celebrations

We celebrate the diversity of our families and recognise that every child comes from a unique background. Our teaching promotes respect and understanding of the protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010, helping children to appreciate differences in culture, religion, family life and individual identity. This supports children in developing tolerance, empathy and mutual respect—key aspects of both our curriculum and British Values.

Children learn about a wide range of cultural and religious celebrations, including:

• Chinese New Year
• Shrove Tuesday
• Easter
• Vaisakhi
• Eid
• Diwali
• Christmas

We also encourage children to talk about and celebrate their own experiences and achievements. This might include birthdays, welcoming a new sibling, or sharing special moments from home. In doing so, children learn to listen to others, share their own ideas and develop confidence—supporting early experiences of democracy and individual liberty.

Through all of these experiences, we prepare children not only for the next stage of their education, but for life in modern Britain—helping them grow into respectful, confident and caring individuals.
