The Key Person Approach
At Rawmarsh & Arnold Nursery School Federation, we understand how important it is for children to feel safe, secure and valued when they are away from home. That is why every child is supported through our Key Person approach.
What is a Key Person?
A Key Person is a dedicated member of staff who has special responsibility for your child. They take time to get to know your child as an individual — their interests, personality, strengths and needs — and use this knowledge to support their learning and development.
Why is the Key Person Important?
Young children learn best when they feel secure and have strong relationships with the adults caring for them.
The Key Person plays a vital role in helping children to:
- Feel safe, settled and confident in the nursery environment
- Build trusting relationships with adults
- Develop independence and self-esteem
- Express their thoughts, feelings and ideas
Having a consistent adult helps children to feel understood and supported, particularly during important times such as settling in or transitions.
Working in Partnership with Families
The Key Person also acts as the main point of contact for parents and carers.
They will:
- Share information about your child’s day and progress
- Work closely with you to understand your child’s needs and routines
- Support communication between home and nursery
- Be available to answer questions or discuss any concerns
