Settling In
Starting nursery is a big milestone for both children and families. It is completely normal for children of this age to feel a little unsettled at times — some days drop-offs will feel easy, and other days may feel more emotional. This is all part of the process, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
Here are some simple ways you can help your child feel confident and secure as they settle in:
Practice and Prepare
Helping your child become familiar with the idea of nursery can make a big difference.
- Talk positively about what they will do at nursery
- Point out exciting things they might enjoy (such as the slides or sandpit)
- Role-play “going to nursery” with toys or siblings
Be Positive
Children are very aware of how adults are feeling, even if they don’t show it.
Try to talk about nursery as an exciting and enjoyable experience. If children hear worry or uncertainty, they may begin to feel that there is something to be concerned about.
Make Mornings Calm and Enjoyable
A calm and positive start to the day can really help.
- Allow enough time to get ready without rushing
- Keep routines consistent
- Share a quiet moment together, such as reading a book or watching a short programme
- Getting dressed in nursery clothes can also help children feel prepared
Be Honest and Reassuring
It is always best to be clear and honest with your child.
- Let them know when you will return (e.g. after group time or lunchtime)
- Tell them who will be collecting them
- Keep your goodbyes calm and consistent
This helps children feel secure and understand what to expect.
We’re Here for You Too
We understand that it can be upsetting if your child is unsettled at drop-off. Please let us know how you are feeling — we are always happy to offer reassurance.
We can update you on how your child has settled once you have left, or simply offer a friendly chat and a cup of tea if needed.
Little Goodbye Rituals
Simple routines can be very comforting for children. You might try:
- A high five, hug or special handshake
- Singing a favourite song together
- Saying a fun goodbye phrase (e.g. “Take care, polar bear!”)
- Drawing a small picture or stamp on their hand as a reminder of you
- Putting a photo of you in their pocket
Settling in takes time, and every child is different. With patience, consistency and support, children quickly grow in confidence and begin to enjoy all the wonderful experiences nursery has to offer
